What is a good keyword density?

Your keyword density (KD) strategy should include the HTML title, meta, comments, links, images, alt tags, etc. As you see, there are many points in your SEO campaign where keyword density is import. However, don't take it to seriously.

Some SEO's will disagree with us on this point, but let us tell you why not to take it to seriously.  At one point in time it was advisable to obsess about KD.  To determine the correct KD it was advised to research your competitor via an SEO audit (an SEO audit is still advisable), and determine what KD they used for their target keywords.  Through the years, we found most successful sites have a KD of about 3% - 4%. We also found that simply being aware of KD and the importance of keywords in your body copy, links, alt tags, etc. is generally enough, so long as you use keywords.

Caution: DO NOT STUFF YOUR PAGES WITH KEYWORDS. Write naturally for humans and use keywords vs non-keywords for search engine. 99% of the time, that will be enough if you have optimized the other elements of your site and continually build RLP.

Here is an example:

Non-keyword dense sentence:
This site rocks!

Keword dense sentence:
This SEO website built on Joomla rocks!

Notice we wove in the keywords SEO, Joomla and website.

A really BAD keyword dense sentence:
This seo search engine optimization website built in Joomla Joomla rocks awesome baam smo and training!

Obviously, that is too much and makes no sense. Yes, it has keyword density, but it's terrible. You not only want traffic to your site, but you need to show you are professional, intelligent and communicate your message.  That last example may help in getting traffic, but it will drive the user away in less than 3 seconds.
