Is hidden text OK?
No. Hidden text is considered spam. We do NOT recommend you try to trick the search engines by using hidden text. It's a darn good way to get black listed, or at least get dropped out of the search engines until you remove the hidden text. What about light colored text that is hard to read? We are not a big fan of this either, but that is more a design aesthetic, than a search engine penalty. However, some times you want a light colored text. An example on our own site is the "navigation trail." On many pages you will find light colored text at the top of the page which is our sub. navigation. We made the color light, so as not distract from the primary content of the page. However, we WANT you to see it, and use it to navigate within in a sub.section. So, in this instance it's 100% valid, not unethical, or spam. The point here is to use light colored text when it has an aesthetic and design value. If you are just converting your hidden text to light colored and pushing it below the fold, or footer, then its an obvious spam technique and we do not recommend it. |
