Question: Do social media badges cause PR bleed?
Answer:
Many, many of the various social media networks encourage their users to create "Badges" that the user can then post on their on sites or blogs. This is a nice feature which can be utilized to encourage the expansion of a business network of friends, peers, and business associates. This is especially useful when utilizing LINKEDIN's recommendation functions. However, the raw code of most badges usually has a direct html link to your profile. As you know, links pointing off your site causes PR bleed. You can minimize this by creating a special page that has the real badges and the links pointing off site. Or, if you intend to have the badges on all pages, all the time via the global navigation structures, then I recommend that you modify all the BADGE code to use the Google REl="NOFOLLOW" tags. This should keep the bots on your site and indexing away without out "bleeding" your PR value to the many, many different social media networks. This will, as they say, help "juice up" the other more important text links of your site.
