What is Twitter

Twitter is a lite-weight social networking platform similar to LinkedIn or Facebook, but only allows for blog post of a 140 characters or less. It takes about two seconds to set up a basic profile and start tweeting. Given that the system only allows 140 characters per post, you need to thoughtful and exact in whatever you "twitter" about. Though many people use it for personal chatter trivialities, businesses are increasingly turning to Twitter for developing "fan" style pages related to their overall company, special projects, events and introducing themselves to new, potential customers and business partners.

Here is the approach we advise and practice.

1) Create an account using your specific business name, or product.
2) Search existing Twitter Profile for keywords relevant to your products or services
3) View the individual profile pages, and FOLLOW those that are relevant.

When you "follow" a tweeter, they may, depending on their personal settings, get a an email notice from Twitter that you are "following" them. Good "twitters" will likely send you a thank you note, and start following you, especially if you already happen to have a recognizable brand name. If they do, you will get an email, depending on your settings, notifying you that someone has "followed" you profile. Reply with a short messaage of thanks. Ie.

"Thanks for the follow."

Now, another exciting aspect of twitter is that people can connect their twitter accounts to their cell phones. So, if they are following you, when you post a new "tweet" it can be sent to their phones. How nice is that? This is especially ideal for companies who have frequent new product launches, sales, etc.

Overall, it is our opinion, that every business should allocate, or hire, a resource to manage a twitter, account at least on weekly basis.
