Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Hey, everybody. I’m Mike Zittel with SERR.Biz and today our Odoo, conversation is with Oliver. From Odoo4project Oliver's company specializes in hosting for Odoo. Now Odoo has normally, you know, Enterprise level, which is the full SAAS, and it just it's the online version. You get what you get, you can do customizations within, the studio parts, but not many third party applications.

00;00;33;24 - 00;00;58;08

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

And there's ODOO SH which is the hosted solution by ODOO which integrates with GitHub. And that's cool. And a lot of companies use that. But not all companies always want that. They want to actually host it themselves. So they have total control and security, etc.. Myself, I prefer not to do patches, but that's why I'm going to talk to, Oliver because he's an expert in this.

00;00;58;14 - 00;01;13;07

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

So. Oliver, welcome. Glad you're here. And, tell me about tell me about your company and your service and why people would want, to host their own version of ODOO.

00;01;13;09 - 00;01;33;09

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

Yeah. Michael, first of all, thank you for having me on your channel. It's a pleasure. Nice video you're having. So, we started Odoo4projects, as a hosting provider for, for, of course. Odoo. And we tried to make the, it very easy for people to start with, for small business, for startups.

00;01;33;09 - 00;01;55;18

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

I always have a big heart for startups. I, had several startups in my life, so I know the hustle and the first and the beginnings and the cost constraints and the beginnings when you have to turn off every penny, turn over every penny. So the first big, difference between Odoo.sh and, you Odoo4projects is, of course, we host.

00;01;55;18 - 00;02;17;13

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

You do enterprise, but with the first you can start with Google community, which is basically the, open source version of Odoo. So you can start with, Odoo, try everything out, set up your website, set up your warehouse, set up your production, and you might run here and there and to, shortcomings of the community version.

00;02;17;15 - 00;02;33;08

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

But, I would say, let's say 80% of the startup you can all do with Odoo Community. So I would like to give you the chance, to small companies to start with, with the community and look for projects. That's. Yeah.

00;02;33;15 - 00;03;00;14

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

So how much like, if it's a small company and their, you know, how much is your. How much is it to host an Odoo Community solution and also in your space because it's hosted and you're running Odoo community is there there's no license fee per users. Right? You could have as many admin staff as you want. Is that another.

00;03;00;16 - 00;03;25;07

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

Yeah, that's a big advantage. You know, I, in my past, profession, I run a lot of big scale projects, and I hated the discussion that we couldn't roll out. For example, Ms.. Project to our team members because of the license fee. Right? Community, you don't have this problem. So if you have, ten people in your in your company, you can, you can give, them, grant ten people access without any extra cost.

00;03;25;09 - 00;03;27;09

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

So that's a big. Well.

00;03;27;12 - 00;03;29;25

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Yeah, that's that's kind of cool.

00;03;29;27 - 00;03;49;14

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

Yeah, exactly. So, basically, we set up, to several price plans. It starts, from 214, US dollars. And this is basically comparable with, Odoo online, and you can, use all the features, but you cannot install own modules. Right. Then the next.

00;03;49;14 - 00;03;52;02

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

That's 214 per year. Per month.

00;03;52;05 - 00;03;52;26

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

That's per year.

00;03;53;00 - 00;03;56;04

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

That's per year. Yeah. That's, that's right in line with that. Okay.

00;03;56;08 - 00;04;23;08

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

And exactly. And includes, backup, so you can have several backups and so on and so on. You can use your own domains, and, pipe it to our, Odoo server so you can, use, GoDaddy, for example. For, for your domain provider, for your email provider. And you just have to set one a record, to, to point, your domain to our Hulu system.

00;04;23;11 - 00;04;45;17

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

So you, you can so, all right. Because like, in, current Odoo enterprise or even Odoo .sh it's a pain, for naked domains like, you know, the video I did last week about setting up naked domains. Yeah. You know, it can be really frustrating. And there's a solution, but it sounds like it's you can actually set an a record with your hosted.

00;04;45;17 - 00;04;50;13

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

So you're hosting the DNS as well, or do you have to change the DNS over at Godaddy? Do you have.

00;04;50;13 - 00;05;10;22

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

To change the DNS at GoDaddy. So you would, would, set in a record for, Serr.biz and www.Serr.biz like you showed on your, on your other video. And, my servers are happy to receiving all the traffic for both domains and serving serving Odoo. So you don't have to change anything on our site.

00;05;10;24 - 00;05;34;19

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Okay. That's good. What about, Is there any kind of root level access? Now, this is just because I'm going off on a kind of geeky SEO side thing here. So, like, currently in Odoo at, Odoo Enterprise or sh, version 18, they've got a really nice redirect tool. And it has 301 redirects. And that's fine if you do that.

00;05;34;19 - 00;05;58;03

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

But 301 redirects from a search engine optimization point of view have become a problem. Unless it's truly a true redirect. You, the better thing to do is to tell Google, delete the page. So I think it's, 4 I forget what that status code is that tells Google it's gone. Get rid of it. Take it out of your index.

00;05;58;06 - 00;06;22;05

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Google will eventually maybe, but it takes them forever. So if you're in that situation, you kind of, at the mercy of Google when they decide to take it out and you keep throwing off 404 error pages because the page doesn't exist anymore. So on your server system, would it be possible to set a .haccess file or similar?

00;06;22;05 - 00;06;25;03

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

I don't know what environment you're in.

00;06;25;05 - 00;06;45;12

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

Now that's, that's that's would not be possible. But we serve both domains as a domain, so there's no redirect. So you actually, when you go or make a domain, it's ends up being served directly without any redirection. So it should be very good for SEO.

00;06;45;15 - 00;06;52;07

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

All right, I don't want to go too far off into the SEO question, so, just it just struck me as we were talking,

00;06;52;10 - 00;07;14;00

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

Talking about root access, perhaps one one thing, and the next plan, we also have the opportunity to, upload own modules using git. Okay. And we decided not to use GitHub because one thing that I really don't like about Odoo SH is that you have to have so many, so many passwords and systems to access. You have to have to have a GitHub.

00;07;14;03 - 00;07;46;15

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

You have to get to your Odoo.com, credentials. You have to have the credentials for your own system. And so we tried to skim it a little bit down. So we actually have an own git server in the package which you can use. And we implemented a feature it's called quick git. So when you just want to upload a module especially for, a startup user who doesn't want to, manage git, he can just upload the zip file and it's been deployed as a git as a, git commit on our side.

00;07;46;16 - 00;07;52;23

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

So you can just upload it. Very nice. Form. And the module gets installed.

00;07;52;25 - 00;08;10;06

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

So it's a little bit faster and quicker. Yeah. The Odoo SH GitHub. I mean, I knew about GitHub. I played with it a little bit, but I had never worked with it like I did with Odoo SH. And that whole process. So you're right, it can be for non geeks. I bet it's just overwhelming.

00;08;10;09 - 00;08;25;03

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

I have, I have several projects I'm very happy with Odoo.sh, especially with its, deployment with GitHub, with all the branches and everything. But, if you want, just want to sell some stuff online and want to use Odoo for it, it's an overkill.

00;08;25;05 - 00;08;58;10

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Yeah, exactly. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it can be. I think it's great. For. Well, I just I think it's great, because it streamlines so many, so much, so many workflows all in one place. You don't have to keep toggling back and forth, you know, the usual Odoo beauty, right? So, That's awesome. All right, so we had talked earlier and you had mentioned, how.

00;08;58;13 - 00;09;11;16

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

You've got, some tips that you wanted to share about people who are trying to actually host it themselves. What were some of those, you know, top three pitfalls that you can, you know, help people give people some advice?

00;09;11;18 - 00;09;38;23

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

My top three pitfalls. The first pitfall is, I saw a lot of installations where, the, the password for the database manager has not been set permanently, so, the the exactly right. Especially here. I personally live in Paraguay. So I was very surprised to see a small restaurant here using Odoo for their, for their accounting system.

00;09;38;26 - 00;10;03;07

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

So I went back and checked it out a little bit because I was very surprised. And I went into the database manager because I knew where it was and no password whatsoever. Oh, so that's the first one. Yeah. So when you, when you install, your system, for, for, let's say for the first time, it could be that you've got some access problems for the, Odoo.com, so it would do itself cannot, persist the password.

00;10;03;07 - 00;10;30;01

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

So when you reboot your server, the password is gone. So that's, the first, first one, which is very, very obvious. Then, of course, I've got a lot of, stuff to, to discuss about, hosting several Odoo instances, but this might not be interesting for for you or for your community. What I would suggest, in any case, is some kind of uptime monitoring.

00;10;30;04 - 00;10;57;00

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

Because, that's that, you know, the server notifies you when you host yourself that some, some issue arises, which is needed for any professional site anyways. And, then I had a long learning period with CrowdSEC but it turned out to be very, very good to have a, service like CrowdSEC securing your server for for all this, pesky hackers, security, the.

00;10;57;01 - 00;10;59;01

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Guys that do nothing but hack.

00;10;59;03 - 00;11;23;15

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

Yeah, exactly. I mean, it's it's a little bit insulting, actually, when you're really hacked, it's one part, but this is great, script kiddie Just, you know, uses your web form to annoy you. And this is. I hate this. So this is one thing. And, actually, I, changed, away from the Google Captcha for phones since we talking about the formulas as if the web forms and change to.

00;11;23;17 - 00;11;41;28

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

No, I was called Cloudflare out of. Sorry. Google Captcha We figured out a little bit how to configure because either the hackers get through or a lot of, real customers get this annoying, message that they're a robot, which is not really good. And I think.

00;11;42;01 - 00;11;44;07

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Yeah, the robot telling you you were a robot. Yeah.

00;11;44;07 - 00;12;14;05

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

That's always .. Exactly the nice new word. So we switched to Cloudflare, and actually, that was quite painless. And, since that, I didn't have any, big problems with other, other, other clients. So that was a good step. And number three would be some kind of, firewall, in terms of smart firewall. So, we decided to, to switch to, I know they called so similar.

00;12;14;05 - 00;12;40;20

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

Sorry for that. Cloudflare and CrowdSEC. Sorry. So the number three is, that you have some kind of firewall. So, we switched to CrowdSEK, which is a very smart, online open source, firewall, which has a lot of, detection rules for, Script Kiddies and, hacking attacks and then immediately blocks, this, this attacks on a firewall level.

00;12;40;23 - 00;12;43;19

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

Which helped a lot in terms of security.

00;12;43;22 - 00;13;07;17

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Nice. So, what's the setup? Just curiosity of the server. So I'm, like, used to working with, you know, WordPress stream, etc.. So it's pretty much always a Lamp config. I have not even really looked into what, the requirements are for a, Python server. Odoo setup, is it, is it running, Linux environment or what's it run?

00;13;07;17 - 00;13;08;02

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Which I don't.

00;13;08;02 - 00;13;30;02

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

Know. I'm a Linux enthusiast. I'm an open source, enthusiast. So all the run on, on Linux environment, of course, we decided not to go the ubuntu route because the recommended route is to install it, do bare metal. So you have your Python and your Odoo directly on the on the Linux system. We just decided to containerize all the services with, with Docker.

00;13;30;05 - 00;13;37;21

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

And that made it very easy for us to, to deploy all our servers worldwide. We have five servers currently and planning on setting up three more.

00;13;37;24 - 00;13;38;12

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Okay.

00;13;38;15 - 00;14;10;28

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

Speaking community, right now we are focused on on the English speaking community. And the way we set it up, enables every server to be independent. So we don't have any kind of background, infrastructure. When the server is up and running, all the Odoo instances, instances are up and running and enabled by the cloud. By the sorry Docker usage of Docker and also one thing which might be very interesting for, for your, viewership, we decided to switch to traffic.

00;14;11;00 - 00;14;41;16

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

A lot of, Docker sorry. Odoo deployments are using NGINX and the NGINX proxy server. I guess it's called, where you can very easily configure your domain names and your certificates and all of this. And we decided to switch over to, to, Traffic, which is newer project. It's doing a similar job then, then NGINX, but the big advantage is that you can configure it using Docker labels.

00;14;41;16 - 00;14;58;08

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

So you just have one, one file, the Docker system or Docker files way you, there you configure your whole setup so you don't have to go into the NFINX config or into the NGINX, administration, you can do everything with Docker.

00;14;58;11 - 00;15;13;06

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Okay. But so your hosting though is kind of taking care of all of that. Right. So like if I come to you and say, all right, I want to do a self-hosted, you're taking care of all that on the back end, which is typically why I go with a hosting company and don't have my own servers, because I just don't want to deal with that.

00;15;13;06 - 00;15;14;08

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

It's too much.

00;15;14;10 - 00;15;37;24

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

So just just to be very clear, we have, we have, let's say a cloud approach with other smaller packages where you are living on servers with other companies. But if you say you want to have either your own VPS or your own bare metal server under your desk, we offer that service as well. So we include this, the services in our administration pool.

00;15;37;24 - 00;16;00;07

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

So you get our Docker images, you get our, pre configured, Odoo and we take care of your server under your desk. So it's, it's included in our, backbone infrastructure. So you have got the complete, access to your data. But you don't have to go through the hassle of setting up all everything updates and everything.

00;16;00;09 - 00;16;23;01

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

I know that we we, started actually this discussion, a little bit back and forth, where you asked me, how do we handle the, updates? Right, exactly. And this is, basically all taken care of us. So the other parts, server parts, we we take care, and we never had a problem. When we dated up or, or server parts with the with the clients.

00;16;23;03 - 00;16;32;00

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

So whatever the client had any problem whatsoever, it just all seamless updates and the security patches and all that. So you're still doing all of that. That's great.

00;16;32;00 - 00;16;40;16

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

But the way the way our system works, actually we redeploy, update. And the client decides when he takes the update by rebooting once.

00;16;40;18 - 00;16;41;10

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Okay.

00;16;41;12 - 00;16;57;18

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

We press this reboot button so he has full control. When the updates are hitting his system, he can he can see, he can monitor if everything is okay or he can preplan everything. So he gets a little bit a little notification, a little heads up that we do some things so he can he can try it out.

00;16;57;21 - 00;17;12;21

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

So on that note, so on Odoo.sh you know, you have your different stages. You've got your live production. And then you can have your betas. Right. Or they what do they call it. Doesn't matter. You can have your live and then your your.

00;17;12;23 - 00;17;14;08

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

Development and staging.

00;17;14;11 - 00;17;37;14

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Staging. Thank you. You have a couple staging and then the other one that that, you know, the the just testing demo thing. The last company I worked for, we had some pretty good customization that was done to the actual Odoo platform. And, the one of the first times, we pushed through just one of these automatic updates from Odoo, it caused problems.

00;17;37;17 - 00;18;04;12

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

So we had to rollback and then go back to the, you know, make a copy into the staging, updated copy with all the changes that we made, push through the update there, debug and then push it live. So, you know, the community user is not going to have just doesn't have that issue. But what about are you so you're kind of just a self-hosted Odoo SH version.

00;18;04;12 - 00;18;07;18

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Do you still have that functionality?

00;18;07;20 - 00;18;28;19

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

So, first of all, the Odoo community, user has that same problem because you can install custom modules as, a command to use as well. So, just to, to, yeah. Right. And then with Odoo 18, we introduced actually own staging server. So, what is happening is so we, start two instances for you.

00;18;28;22 - 00;18;28;26

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Okay?

00;18;29;01 - 00;18;52;24

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

And we have an internal backup system. So, you can just, in the, in the configuration, you can press a button and it's, pushing basically the whole database, in a neutralized manner into the staging system. And then you can test out everything. Right? It's one part. The other part, which I personally prefer, is, we have a basic set up for Docker.

00;18;52;26 - 00;19;17;13

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

So when you, when you, check out your git service for the first time, you get a Docker compose file, which is basically, enabling you to set up a small, system with the database and you do, on your own server on your bare metal at home. So for, for small deployments, I prefer actually using that because I can download it for us.

00;19;17;13 - 00;19;29;27

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

The data is free. You can. And every time you can download all your data, and install another Odoo and just push a new data because you believe, our clients should stay for our service and not just, not because you lock them in.

00;19;30;02 - 00;19;30;27

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Not because you're holding them hostage.

00;19;30;27 - 00;20;03;06

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

Ad. Right. And following that philosophy, enabled server developer, to, to basically download, all the, custom modules, download the, repository and do a Docker compose up and then on your server, on your notebook, develop a notebook, a system, a like the system on the internet is spinning up. You can just restore the, the, backup and have a system like you have online, which is very convenient for development because then you don't have to push anything up and test it.

00;20;03;11 - 00;20;23;14

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

You can just use your, PyCharm, for example. I know a lot of the Indian dudes they love their PyCharm I use something I just use vim. But you can use your PyCharm to test everything. You have got very fast development cycles. And this is what we are looking for to bring the cost of Odoo for the client, for the company down.

00;20;23;16 - 00;20;37;28

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Okay. That sounds like it can be a massively significant, price reduction if you're that big and you know, you truly running an enterprise level, I could see where that could be very enterprise level.

00;20;38;00 - 00;20;56;19

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

I for for me, the price of an ERP system is not only let's say, the license and the hosting, but it's also also how fast can I develop stuff, how fast can I do my backups? What can I automate? Because this is, this is something as a business owner, as a startup, you have to do it yourself, right?

00;20;56;19 - 00;21;12;17

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

So you have to, either invest, let's say one hour and in Odoo. Doing backups and restores. On the other hand, to, put one hour on your business plan and for for me, having successful clients makes me successful in the end. So that's a little bit, the thinking.

00;21;12;19 - 00;21;35;25

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Okay, well, it sounds like it's a good, you know, would be a good solution. So I imagine, do you have do you see any trend in who uses that? I mean, off the top of my head, I would think that medical and, you know, financial services, would be more inclined to want to have, you know, separate hosted solution or, you know, server than anybody else.

00;21;36;02 - 00;21;53;11

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

So it looks like we're kind of running out of time here. So just off the top of your head, what other type of companies you see outside of financial and medical, have you seen wanting to have that other in other than like a, you know, the developer, but the non geek and non geek business that would want their own server.

00;21;53;11 - 00;21;54;22

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Just curiosity.

00;21;54;24 - 00;22;15;17

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

Okay. So the since I'm, I'm a German, so I know that Europe is very big on, on data management. Where are the data, where's the data or not? So for me, it's less, the verticals. Of course, there are some, some natural verticals, like, like your medical, like your, legal legal advisors and stuff like that.

00;22;15;21 - 00;22;18;10

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Right lawyers.

00;22;18;13 - 00;22;34;14

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

But honestly, that is not so big for us. For us, it's more, the, the, European Union, person wants to have, the ownership of their data. Okay. The volt is, quite relaxed, honestly speaking. But. Yeah.

00;22;34;17 - 00;22;45;25

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Okay. So, lawyers and then, places or, you know, countries where data is, more concerned that it is here in the US here, you basically just sign everything away. Yeah.

00;22;45;27 - 00;22;46;27

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

Yeah, exactly.

00;22;47;00 - 00;23;01;04

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Just the way goes. Currently, one last question. Well, two actually one, you mentioned that you've got multiple servers, around the world. So, do you have a US based serving? Yes.. setu up?.

00;23;01;05 - 00;23;05;01

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

So we've got one in New York. One in Canada, in Toronto.

00;23;05;04 - 00;23;05;27

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Okay.

00;23;05;29 - 00;23;13;21

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

And, yeah, that's that's, North American parts. We we've got one in Amsterdam. We've got one and one in London and one in Sydney.

00;23;13;24 - 00;23;14;15

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Nice.

00;23;14;17 - 00;23;37;22

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

Okay. What's interesting, the one in Sydney. I didn't think about that, but it's running quite well. All right. Good and all we are thinking about going to the Spanish speaking community. So Mexico is on our list. Spain. And actually one very nice thing. I hope I can pull that off. Here in Paraguay, we have a big water, water power.

00;23;37;24 - 00;23;39;09

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

How do you call it?

00;23;39;12 - 00;23;40;16

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Hydro electric?

00;23;40;18 - 00;23;47;21

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

Exactly. Thank you for that hydroelectric power plant. And it's it's using water power from from a big river.

00;23;47;24 - 00;23;48;10

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer

Oh, nice.

00;23;48;12 - 00;24;01;03

Oliver Arnold - Odoo4project

There. It's actually a data center in there. And I try to put a server in there because this gives me perfect, CO2 neutral, currency. For free electricity for for my servers.

00;24;01;05 - 00;24;24;07

Michael Zittel - Odoo implementer
